Privacy Policy

This website is realized as part of a project (the “Project”) funded by the European Commission and led by a consortium of non-profit organisations. The project is called “A digital platform for YOU as VOTErs to participate in the 2019 EUropean parliament elections — YOU VOTE EU”, project no. 769006, and the Consortium is made of the following Organisations members of the European Union:

This website is owned by VoteWatch Europe which is the Data Processor. All the Organisations listed above are jointly responsible as Data Controller.

This privacy policy governs the manner in which this website collects, uses, maintains and discloses Personal Data collected from users of the Project website (“the Site”). This privacy policy applies to the Site and does not extend to the privacy policies adopted by each of the Organisations listed above in their activities different from the Project.  

  1. What data we collect

We collect the following personal data on different subject categories.

If you are a member of the current European Parliament (2014-2019), we collect your following publicly available data:

- name and surname

- country of origin

- political opinion

- institutional email address

- political party affiliation

 

If you are a candidate to European Parliament Elections 2019, we collect your:

- name and surname

- email address

- I.D. (picture)

- birth date and place

- Twitter handle

- Facebook account OR Facebook page

- personal website address

 

If you are a non-profit organisation, we collect your following publicly available data:

- name of organisation

- website address

- country / geographical scope of activity

- mission

- email address 

 

If you are an individual private citizen, when you vote on some of the MEPs or NGOs proposals we collect your:

- age

- country of origin

- gender

- email address, if you give us consent by registering on the Site

- IP address

- Facebook/Twitter/email identification, if you give us consent for the purpose of compiling aggregated / anonymous statistics on our users

- political opinions, if you consent to participate to the Match your vote quiz (and which will be forming part of the “What if” section in a aggregated manner)

2) Why we collect  your data

We collect your data in order to carry out the Project.

If you are an current MEP, a candidate MEP or a NGO, we need your data to show citizens your political stands.

If you are a private citizen, we need you to give us some of your data in order to: (i) perform a technical deliverable to you, i.e. to allow you to vote on political proposals you can find on our website, (ii) allow us to aggregate data anonymously for statistical data collecting purposes on our users and thus ensure the accuracy and reliability of statistics on public opinion which are also presented publicly.

3) How we keep data secure

We store your data in servers in the European Union. By using the Site, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country but within the European Union.

We will take any relevant action in case we have concerns about potential data abuses.

We take measures to maintain the confidentiality of your Personal Data and protect it from unlawful disclosure. We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your Personal Data when you enter, submit, or access your Personal Data. The Site has different layers of security depending on the layer of implementation: network, server and application.

The server is protected from unauthorized access: root access is only permitted through SSH and never directly; all user passwords are long, randomized and changed frequently. Database access is permitted only from local host, no external computer can directly connect from outside to the MySQL server running on the machine.

All files accessible through Apache are owned by a low-access level user. Application holes, like SQL injection or unauthorized access to the admin interface were also considered and checked against. Backup is run daily, both on the files and on the databases from the server.

4) Who has access to your data

Your data is accessible by the above listed Organisations.

We will not make your Personal Data available to the general public or third parties, and we will never sell, share or swap your data with any other organisation.

5) Retention of Personal Data

We will retain your Personal Data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purpose(s) for which it was collected and to comply with applicable laws.

6) Cookies

The Site uses session cookies, in order to keep the user logged in when using the Match your vote tool. This cookie is deleted when the user logs out of the system.

The Site uses Google Analytics to track user activity on the Site in order to provide a better user experience.

7) Changes to our Privacy Policy

If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post those changes on this page, and/or update the privacy policy modification date below.
